Horizontal Cabling

The EIA/TIA 568B standard defines horizontal cabling as follows: the horizontal cabling system is the portion of the telecommunications cabling system that extends from the work area to the telecommunications room, or vice versa.

Vertical Cabling

The vertical cabling system provides interconnections between entrance rooms and building services, equipment rooms and telecommunications rooms. Backbone cabling includes the vertical connection (backbone pathways can be vertical or horizontal) between floors in multi-story buildings.

Entrance Room

Cables, connecting hardware, protection devices and other equipment needed to connect the building to external services. It may contain the demarcation point. They provide the electrical protection established by applicable electrical codes. They must be designed according to the EIA/TIA-569-A standard.
